Swiatek Wins First Mutua Madrid Open Title

Saving Championship Points

Madrid, Spain

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek saved three championship points to beat world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka and win her first Mutua Madrid Open title on Sunday.

Swiatek, who lost to Sabalenka in last year's final, won 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-2 in a match that lasted two hours and 40 minutes. The victory gives Swiatek her third big clay title in her career, after winning the Rome Masters in 2021 and 2022 and the French Open in 2020 and 2022.

Sabalenka had a chance to serve for the match at 5-4 in the second set, but Swiatek broke her serve to level the set at 5-5. Sabalenka then had two championship points at 6-5 in the tiebreak, but Swiatek saved both of them and went on to win the tiebreak 7-2.

In the third set, Swiatek broke Sabalenka's serve twice to take a 4-0 lead. Sabalenka broke back once, but Swiatek held her serve to win the match.

The victory is Swiatek's eighth WTA title of her career and her first since winning the Australian Open in January. She is now 24-2 on the season.
